I hear you... I'm rewatching the whole shebang and am up to ep. 8 for the umpteenth time. My MO is to watch raw twice for body language, facial expressions, etc., and then hit two or three sets of subs before the recap... I have a galloping case of Oh Hae-itis.

I too watch the show raw at first to see all the nuances of the actors. Even without the subs, many times I'm pretty sure about what is happening. Until I read the subs and find out how wrong I was!
I did live St Paul, MN for almost 25 years, but now live in Oregon. Part of my heart is still there.

The only part of the teaser I understood is that PDK said in the end "I would be glad if you came back" I think OHY's mom said "Hand in your resignation and go together with your parents.. somewhere?" And maybe HTJ said "Sorry about the misunderstanding?" Feel free to clarify people who speak Korean!
But best part is Daddy Oh protecting PDK from Mama Oh! <3

I was tickled to see DK's shoes that he parked at OHY's front door. Yay! She didn't toss them -- or return them!
Are there any other Robert Heinlein fans in the house? In his swashbuckling fantasy novel Glory Road, the long-lived and serially-monogamous Empress of the Twenty Universes allows her lovers to park their shoes under her bed for as long as she wishes to continue the relationship. When she tosses their shoes out from under the bed, the jig is up...
Loved that scene of Daddy Oh and DK making a lightning-quick getaway from Mama Hwang.

Just returned from Brisbane & Gold Coast yesterday, it was a great get away from the cold gloomy wintry rain, and I also got to see Lang Lang performed live. I sat in the mid rear choir section which had a very close rear view of the stage, it felt so exhilarating to see his hands danced swiftly on the keyboard and to be able to see his facial expressions so clearly. That was a superb performance with many in the audience giving him the standing ovation.
Ok, back to drama talk, I’m undergoing a very dry spell, nothing could really quench my thirst so to speak. Not even Yoon Shi-yoon or Jang Guen-suk could motivate me to watch Mirror and Jackpot. Actually I think JGS looked kind of stupid in the sageuk costume in Jackpot, he looked a lot more better in Hong Gil-Dong. While patiently waiting for LJK’s Scarlet Heart to air, out of the current drama, I’m only watching Beautiful Gong Shim. The drama exudes similar vibe as French movie, Amelie, my all-time favorite. Gong Shim’s quirkiness does feel a bit like Audrey Tautou’s portrayal of Amelie. The interaction between Gong Shim and Dan-Tae is preciously entertaining, it has been a treat watching Gong Shim’s deadpan expression and cluelessness crumbling Dan-Tae’s cool as cumber front as he increasingly fussed over her. Dan-Tae’s character does remind me of Namkoong Min as Yoo Joon-soo in Wild Chives and Soy Bean Soup: 12 Years Reunion, both act in a garrulous and cheeky manner towards their love interest.
Since I’ve not been watching much drama, I turned to watching movies instead. Just want to mention two which exceeded my expectation. Do go watch Joo-Won’s Catch Me(Steal My Heart) if you wish to relish a good laugh, there are scenes which made me laughed so hard until I cried. In contrast, Unforgettable (Pure Love) is of more sombre mood, but sentimental and touching. EXO’s Do Kyung-soo is the lead actor, at first I mistook him for Kim Soo-hyun, as he does look quite like him.
That’s all for today, have a great weekend beanies!

As movies have more versatile genres, what constitutes a good movie is quite subjective. If you are into kmovies, you will come across movies directed by Kim Ki-Duk and Park Chan-Wook whose movies earned international acclaim, but the style of satirical and black humour is quite difficult for some people to accept, and I find movies like KKD's 3-Iron, and PCW's 3 Vengeance Trilogy movies quite emotionally and mentally disturbing. There are also lots of kmovies with strong steamy scenes which may be disturbing and offensive to some people too. But if you're just after some light and warm-hearted entertainment, my recommendations are the all-time classic My Sassy Girl, My Tutor Friend and More Than Blue.

anything disturbing is not my cup of tea... I'm of the opinion that life itself can be sometimes hard and we might have to deal with disturbing situations or hear about disturbing news...so nothing disturbing on my tv screen... but I don't mind a heartfelt sad movie like hearty paws; I have heard of kim ki duk movies... he is quite famous in film fests here in my place.... but I've not ventured to see his movies...and I don't think I would ever. I've seen sassy girl and tutor friend. And liked them both. Will check out more than blue. I'm midway through Catch Me and really liking it.
I've been doing a movie marathon the past few days, really liked few movies, they are Welcome to Dongmakgol, Miss Granny, Miracle in Cell No.7, Accidental Detective, Hearty Paws 2(its not a sequel, only that the dog is same with same name hearty...this one is a laugh riot).

@aqua❤JCW,
I watched WELCOME TO DONGMAKGOL a couple of months ago, and loved it. Joe Hisaishi's score was gorgeous. I'd gotten such a kick out of Ryu Deok-Hwan's performance as King GongMin in FAITH that I started watching his earlier work. MY SON (2007) with Cha Seung-Won is a moving character study, with a fantasy sequence that reminded me of DONGMAKGOL.
You might enjoy HEAVEN'S SOLDIERS (2005), which is more a time slip fusion sageuk than a straight action flick. It has its comic moments, but it's not a comedy. It's downright touching at times. More like "Saving Admiral Yi Sun-Shin." I'd already seen RAGING CURRENTS, and welcomed another look at the Admiral Nelson of Korea. (Skip it if battles with Jurchens are too gory for you.)
A very calm, slice of life film that I watched a while back is ONE MORE STEP TO THE SEA (2009). I'd enjoyed Kim Young-Jae's turn as Soo Ni-Moon in THE KING'S DAUGHTER, SU BAEK-HYANG and wanted to see more of his work. Han Ye-Ri of SFD is in it, too.

June 10, 2016 at 5:23 PM
Glad that you like Catch Me, it is a rare gem which is easily overlooked as the IMDb rating is so low. Yes, the humour may be quite brainless and stupid, but undeniably hilarious which can make people laugh so heartily, this I think is the most important factor for a comedy to be considered good.
Same here, I will usually avoid disturbing movies, life situations can be so tough at times, there is no need to add unnecessary burden to the mind. In my younger days, I used to enjoy Japanese horror movies, but I stopped watching them a long time ago as I think they clutter the subconscious mind with undesirable stuff. However, I agree that heart-felt sad movies and tear jerkers are great in relieving sorrowful emotions, and offer some form of consolation at times.
Thanks so much for your recommendation too, I will check them out this long weekend (it's pubic holiday here on Mon)!

As for light hearted movies, TThe Chilly Romance with Lee MinKi is awesome, She is on Duty, Baby and Me, Speedy Scandals are good. There are many which are heartfelt, nothing gruesome like Werewolf Boy, Miracle in Cell no. 7, The Frontlime, The Bleaknight are very touching movies. I am pretty sure you can find most of these movies YouTube. I like most of Kim Ki Duk's movie while some are hard to swallow, but The Isle is the one I like the best. Poongsan is one of my favorite from Yoon Kye Sang in which his acting is superb. I hope you enjoy!

I would have liked Gong Shim more if she is as mischievous as Amelie, who focused her attention more in brightening up the lives of people around her. In comparison, Gong Shim is more self-conscious and has a tendency to be self-deprecating while wallowing in self-pity. Still, when I saw GS holding up and ringing the bicycle bell while walking through the crowd, that quirkiness immediately reminded me of Amelie. :)

Happy Friday Beanies! This week is awesome because my kid went to school for the first time in 5 months without crying AND the husband gave me Korean lessons as a early anniversary surprise! Going to meet new people interested in Korean- Maybe fellow drama addicts! So I'm floating on cloud nine now.
Wanted to share my happiness ❤️
Watched Beautiful Gong Shim, Nail Shop Paris and just started I Remember You.
I know why Nail Shop Paris and WTF are synonymous now. If not for @Quirkstine telling me SJR was darn swoony I would have given it up after half of epi 1. SJR is so SKINNY in it tho. I think he looks a zillion times better in Thumping Spike. That being said I literally spat water onto my laptop at the part where Alex said "she is sick because of too much sex" so it wasn't like the storyline wasn't... interesting. The writer was on crack but should have passed it to Alex instead-> less crazy plot + Alex showing emotions + SJR getting the girl = much better drama.
Beautiful Gong Shim remains fab and it got me wondering what makes up an addictive drama? I thought about DOTS which was INSANELY popular and I too swooned over Captain SJK but I wasn't craving each episode.
Why am so invested in GS/DT/JS? It's not just being biased to Nam Goong Min either because DT's character is less charming and more off beat.
So maybe it's the writing? Many say there is "little/no plot" but I find the character growth for GS and the mystery behind DT more compelling, compared to DOTS where all the realism and suspense vanished once I realised that SJK could be shot, have his heart stop and could still look gorgeous and save the day.
Perhaps BGS feels more realistic? I'm loving GS more after epi 8. Though birth secrets and a hero who can dodge fast moving objects isn't Exactly Realistic at all.
So I can't explain my addiction to BGS...I just am. Lol.
What do you Beanies think? What makes a drama addictive for you?
Have a great weekend everyone!

What do you mean by 'addictive' drama? Drama which makes you watch it raw? Drama which makes you think about it all the time? Drama which comes to your mind out of the blue? Drama which shows up in your dream?
For me drama I think the most often is still 'Immortal Lee Soon-shin'. It was that emotional.

mind if I add mine?
for a drama to be addictive in my mind
1) Lee Sang Woo (my biased answer)
2) It has character I can sympathize with or basically good acting
3) It has mystery
4) The problem is realistic and story I can invested
3 out of 4 can make me like a drama but to watch it raw,
it has to have one real story I particularly interested in watching,
as the example , the mystery like KMHM (it has twist almost every week, lovable character and acting), Marriage Contract (I deeply care about the main lead and the kid), Answer Me 1994 (chilbong's story, enough said)

I like Lee Sang Woo as well as Joo Sang-Wook in Feast of the Gods. I would watch dramas of my favourite actors and actresses, and sit through all episodes regardless. My persistence can be quite mentally exhausting when the drama is not so good, or when I do not quite enjoy that particular genre, eg. LYW in Empire of the Gold, JSW in Birth of a Beauty, etc, as such, I now have a tendency to not even watch the 1st episode of a drama with my fav lead unless I'm pretty sure that it will be enjoyable. The only exception is LJK, all his projects are sageuk, which I don't usually watch, but I will still watch his upcoming Scarlet Heart regardless..

I think I like Beautiful Gong Shim because the character is well rounded, normal people and fun.
They all so different with different goal in life yet manage to capture so much life in their portrayal, (this sound so bias but Idk another way to explain it)
they do not just feel real and weird but they are fun t watch,
Gong shim actually understand her problem and she tried her best to fix it while being optimistic.
Dan Tae who knew it all, smart and street smart but can't escape his childish attempt when he got confused
Junsu, the nice guy who actually doesn't know a lot of things in life and realize that's his shortcoming,
Yet all of them can be friends
I think I just miss the day of nice people with different character has genuine friendship, fun vibe and their communication , the 3 of them talks the things out when they had misunderstanding or they don't agree
I just like the character and love them on screen.
ps: my grandma finally watch DoTS and she said she loves it, for old people like her, this is the humanity she prefers to watch

What makes dramas addicting to me is, when I can relate to the characters.... I have this habit of thinking what if it were me, while watching dramas... So when the plot, or how the characters behave goes in a manner I can relate, I can connect with a drama. Drama's like Coffee Prince, Healer, and now Beautiful Gong Shim as far as its aired now.(after cheese in the trap and DOTS, I will trust a drama only after its finished) Other than that, fast moving plots, plenty of romance and comedy also get me hooked. But first condition is mandatory....it's my curse. It is one of the reasons why I can't enjoy lucky romance(something is seriously wrong with the heroine's brain) and I know OHAYA is great, and I will watch until the end, but it won't connect with me. hmm...
But Yes excited for BGS now...!

DOTS was weird, I watched eps 7 and 8 and enjoyed the heck out of them but felt no need to watch any more of it, so I didn't.
For me, addictive means: I watch raw, I watch subbed, I watch one more time for stuff I might have missed. I read the recaps, I read the comments, I read the Soompi forum, I scour the web for any other people doing recaps, I read the recaps again and the comments again.
I've only been addicted to Monstar and I Remember You.
There are many others that I enjoy, and I will watch those raw but instead of watching again with subs, I'll just wait for the recap.
Glad your kid got off to school without crying. I always felt bad for the parents dropping off crying kids, they felt so terrible even though I knew the kids would stop crying in a matter of minutes when they were adjusted. Kids just don't like transitions, it seems.

I'm amazed you could walk away from SJK in DOTS. He is the reason I kept watching despite no plot. He is so swoony he makes my teeth hurt.
I'm totally guilty of the googling to read about the actors and then trying to watch whatever they have been in. Hence me watching I Need Romance 3 for Nam Goong Min, despite the fact that he didn't get the girl. ?

What makes a drama addictive for me is script and direction.
I will only sit through all episodes of crap for one person and one person only. Even for him, though, I quit watching one drama because his character was such a prick.
DOTS...I tried. Appreciated meeting SJK but bailed after 5 episodes and marathoned Nice Guy instead.
I would have bailed from Goodbye Mr. Black but it had my glue in it.
Signal, couldn't wait for newly subbed episodes. Because of Signal I marathoned Misaeng.
Dear My Friend is my current crack.
My all-time fave is The Moon Embracing The Sun. First Kdrama I ever watched and began to understand what all the fuss was about. I've watched it at least 4 times all the way through and watched selected episodes who knows how many times. Even now that I've been introduced to shows that are so well-crafted they leave TMETS in the dust, I still keep it on my watch lists. That's addiction.

It's a combination of characters and writing. I love character driven novels and anything that feels like it could be a written novel will have me hooked. I like to take My Name is Kim Sam Soon as an example. Despite the plot being almost typical it felt so much like an unfolding novel. I was watching a person come alive.

I'm definitely a loyal girl - even when I knew Heirs was a hot mess, I watched it all the way through anyway because I simply cannot resist Lee Min Ho's chiseled face.
As for any other shows, rants and raves on Open Threads and the annual year-end roundup of shows on Dramabeans definitely help me make my decisions. For example, there wasn't a whole lot of hype surrounding Last, but it seemed to get favourable reviews in 2015's year-end picks, so I picked it up, and it was really good!

My selection process is a mix of all of those.
I usually pick which airing dramas I want to follow base on the actors and the initial premise. If one of my top faves sign up for a project, I'm almost 100% sure to watch it out of pure loyalty no matter what it is about (unless the premise does not appeal to me at all and my drama charge is already at its limit).
Sometimes a trailer will grab my attention when the drama didn't appeal to me at first or I just inexplicably feel the need to check the drama out for no concrete reason.
When it comes to marathons, it is usually something like instinct. I just pick a random drama off my to-watch-list that I feel like watching base on my current mood or interest. I do the same with movies. That's why sometime I go weeks only watching tragic love stories and then randomly start only watching horror ghost stories or romcoms.
I just remembered that when I first stumbled into dramaland and didn't know Dramabeans or anything about dramas, I would just blindly click on a random drama and hope for the best. Looking back, I was living a little too close to the edge lol
Have a nice weekend!

That's funny what you said about anticipating Friday.
I used to have a job that's on-call 24/7 and I never understood the obsession with Friday/weekend/Monday blues. When I shifted to a less stressful schedule, I started hating Mondays and waiting for weekends too!
Funny how even if I was doing less work in the 2nd job, I was less happy during weekdays. XD Maybe a glass half-full person would've been thankful for the free weekends instead...

I watch as much as possible, and unfortunately for me I can't drop a drama (maybe dozing off while watching but still) in the middle no matter how bad it is. I can't still watch them all because there are just so many number of dramas out there -currently I watch 4 Mon-Tues, 3 Wedn-Thurs, 5 on weekend, dramas-wise (and you work- have to make a living)

For currently airing dramas I always pick which ones are interesting based on the promo material and watch the first few episodes. I usually only stick to one or two currently airing dramas all the way through. I'll also check out a show if it is getting a lot of attention on DB, as I did for Healer.
For past dramas, it's really a mix of what sounds interesting and what I've heard about a drama. I stay far, far away from dramas with horrible objective reviews such as Heirs no matter how much I like the cast. If a drama gets that much criticism, there is a 0.01% chance I will like it.
I used to never be able to drop a drama but I finally have begun dropping and it's so freeing. I've never come across a drama that I end up loving if it doesn't grab me by episode 4 or 5, so if I'm at that point and have no desire to continue a drama then I drop it right there. Why spend hours watching something you don't like when you could move on to your next favorite thing instead?

I have some loyalty for an actor and actress but it doesn't mean I'll watch it real time, it just means I will definitely watch it till the end.
the thing I am sure of is I reluctant to watch adaptation/remake.
I watch many J-drama and some TW-drama before and sometimes Kdrama make a remake but since I feel like I already knew the story, I am not really interested in watching the drama but rather to analyze the drama.
That's my bad, that's why I haven't relly watch and enjoy Cantabile Tomorrow.

I pick based on:
recommendations from here or other sites + I must like the lead actor (has to be cute!) + must not sound like it's going to be a tragic ending.
When I'm crushing on a new Oppa I also always google what other shows they have been in and then watch them. Usually it helps prevent me from being too impatient for new episodes to see them again. ?
I love Friday now too because it means closer to weekend and my fix of BGS!

I don't generally watch a show for an actor/actress, I judge it based on plot and the teasers. If I like those I try the first two episodes, which clinches the deal.
Now, there are exceptions--if a consistently good writer gets together with a consistently good cast I figure it has a consistently better chance of catching my interest. Hence Police Squad 38 and W: Two Worlds. No teasers on the latter yet, but I've loved the writer's two previous world-bendy dramas.

Happy Friday! Glad it is Friday. I feel exhausted after watching Entertainer.
Yay for 'Signal' which received the best drama award last week. I found PD Kim Won-suk's interview.[OSEN]
He also did 'Misaeng' (and Sungkyunkwan scandal). He started in KBS with the drama '19 28'(2005), did a few including King Sejong the great (2008), Partner(2009) and Cinderella's sister(2010) before he moved to TVN and did Monster, Misaeng and Signal.
On Signal's success, he said "I am not a star PD. I don't think people will watch just because I make it unlike Na Young-suk PD(of Flower series). I just met good staffs, actors and writers."
His concern was drama budget. "I seriously started to think about becoming a movie director after doing 'Signal'. I felt sorry for the reality you have to worry about money, while filming with such great actors/actresses. In case of movie, they film with vast money invested even with expectation of possible loss. But drama is different. For 'Signal' we couldn't spend more than 'Misaeng' if you exclude the payment for the actors. It was a crime drama you have to make it well with enough money, but I couldn't spend money, and I made it feeling worried." He revealed production cost for Signal was about $7M. So each episode had less than half $M including payments for actors -you can imagine how much he felt burdened.
PD Kim also did 'Sungkyunkwan scandal' which had 4 leads (Song Joon-gi, Yoo Ah-in, Park yoo-chun and Park Min-young) whom we won't likely see all together in another project again. There were huge discontent on casting, and it was big move to pick Park Yoo-chun who was just started out. He said it was gamble for him, but it was success, and thanks to the friendship they built doing that project, Song Joong-gi even sent a coffee truck to 'Signal' set. "That time the only actor who didn't get criticism when cast was Song Joong-gi. He had the closest image to Go Yoong-ha, and he really worked hard. The thing I remember about him is that He had baby face, but was manly who couldn't stand something not righteous. On the contrary, Yoo Ah-in was detailed and kind. Park went through painful training being newbie, so he had good concentration on the set. Since casting is responsibility of PD, I worked hard make it work."
On Signal casting he said, "I wanted Cha Soo-hyun character is played by an actor with charisma. And I thought if I change Kim Hye-soo sunbae-nim's charisma a little, it can be female detective's charisma. Jo Jin-woong is an actor who does unique acting. Lee Jae-han character Jo was playing had to express emotional scenes well, and he was excellent. As for Lee Je-hoon, no need even to talk. We had hard time to persuade Jo Jin-woong. I met him face-to-face and did awful lot of persuading before he finally accepted."

(He once mentioned he must have done some good deed in his previous life to have these three casted. The response him and writer wanted to have the most was that people get curious about Lee Je-han's fate, and they got it)
He goes to the set roughly prepared. "If I go prepared too much, I don't tend to do the thinking on the set. I plan ways how to make the scene not boring during the shooting. I add details naturally that way. I don't go into detail for visually stunning scenes. I just want to create a situation where actors can concentrate and immerse in their roles naturally. I set the condition, and tell them 'Do your never-done-before acting.' Actors can do acting better when they have such burden."
Doing 'Signal' he had many discussions with writer Kim Eun-hee about scripts. "No matter how new they are, the owner of script is the writer, and writer should have a point that he/she can't give up no matter what. So there are times what the drama PD thinks and what
drama writer thinks are different and discussion are needed. I think writer should respect the conclusion of discussion."
Another reason for the show's popularity was that it was dealing cold cases. "Actually kidnapping was one of crimes that I didn't want to deal with, but I couldn't avoid. Hwaseong serial killer case was most well-known cold case, and writer Kim said she heard the most about SinJungDong case during her investigation, so we included those. On the case of gang rape, even though it was not serial killer case, it has significant meaning, so we included it. We picked cases which had meaning and viewers might feel interested." PD Kim has nick 'SukTaeil' (Kim Wonsuk+ Detail) which he earned doing Miseang for his detailed directing - in scenes like showing the office desks reflecting each character's personality, and same detailed directing showed in Signal.
PD Kim has made dramas for over 10 years, and he is worried about the drama production situation. "Pre-production will be meaningful only after drama production environment improves first. The way making pre-production shows only to pass China's regulations will not give progressive impact on K-drama market. Also other countries don't air 2 episodes in a week. Unless we give up broadcasting 2 episodes per week, this terrible drama production system will not get better, and if they just depend on the market, improvement will never be made." He also worries about tendency to depend on overseas investment. "You should make a drama for Koreans to watch first. I am afraid there won't be dramas like 'Sandglass' or 'Eyes of Dawn' which deal with Korean modern history any more, because Chinese won't invest in such dramas. Then again, you can't make a drama only with the budget given by the TV station. Since payments for actors get higher and drama became industrialized, it costs more than ever, so you have to plan and keep overseas investment in your mind."

He said he makes dramas telling warm story. "The center of all dramas I make is a warm story where show human. In Monster, Miseang, Signal, I tried to create moments where human side shows. We had that mindset dealing with cold cases in Signal. In handling cases I thought I should deal honestly, rather than using too predictable methods... I think the role of drama is important because it makes us to understand other human being. Good drama shares others' emotions and help to understand them, so good drama cannot be not beneficial to public."

I like how he explains discussing things with the writer even aout the cases. And alo his bits about drama-making environment. It is kinda weird to realize that everything anyone wants is recognition and later on profit but with that recognition (and economic value) it somehow limits the creative aspect of drama-making. And i wholeheartedly agree with what he said.

"I am afraid there won’t be dramas like ‘Sandglass’ or ‘Eyes of Dawn’ which deal with Korean modern history any more, because Chinese won’t invest in such dramas."
Makes me want to cry because it's true. I think that goes for the authentic sageuks too (double the sadness).
(yvettex's comment in SFD summed up how I feel about the change in the industry.)
"Sandglass and Eyes of Dawn taking the nation by storm and giving Korean audience a kind of historical consciousness even for sensitive issue like Gwangju Massacre. That’s the era that treated TV dramas as a serious means of cultural expression and even political awakening.
Now, Korean dramas are seen as an entertainment “industry,” a cash cow. The production environment and the purpose are all very different."
20+ years later we still have writer Song Ji-Na, Choi Min-Soo, Chae Si-Ra, Park Gun Hyung, Go Hyun-Jung...I keep hoping that maybe just maybe Song Ji-Na will team up with a director like An Pan-Seok and take us back to that golden era one more time.
Thank you fan <3.

"You should make a drama for Koreans to watch first."
TOTALLY agree on this statement. It applies to every country with a drama watching population too. Korean dramas are very popular in Singapore nowadays and the quality of their writing and acting may be even better than our local dramas, but we should still support out local dramas because I want to see stories touching on the concerns of Singaporeans and set against backdrops and scenery that we have grown up with.
So hopefully PD Kim will be able to realise his wish, because in the end, kdramas are just entertainment for audiences in other countries.

I respectfully disagree with your last statement. While I got into Kdrama for entertainment, I found myself actually learning so much about Korean history and culture. Kdrama has broadened my view of the world. I know much more about Conficious than I did 2 years ago. I also came to a better understanding of international conflict, especially relating to Eastern Asia.
I completely understand PD Kim's point of view. But in the end, his work and the work of others in the Kdrama field has had a far-reaching effect.

@Gina,
Perhaps I don't mean it that way. I too learned a lot about Korean history from watching the sageuks, but in the end, kdramas are just entertainment in that while they broadened your horizons and deepened your knowledge of the world, they are not stories of your own home and culture.
Years later, you can only point to a kdrama and tell your children and grandchildren that this was what you used to watch, not how things were like back then.

Thank you for translating and sharing this with us Fan! What a wise, sensible man. You can see how all his dramas reflect his professional approach to his work.
I agree wholeheartedly with his views on pre-production and Chinese investments on k-drama industry. Yes, first and foremost, a K-drama is and should be made with the Korean audience in mind. I too find it quite unsettling that China is getting more and more involved in K-drama production. Of course I understand there are budgetary constraints and that is the driving factor towards getting overseas financial support, but when you have China (or any other country for that matter) financing , you cannot really produce an independent drama as you do have to take account the suggestions (or demands in more aggressive cases) of those who sponsor you. So at the end you have a K-drama, but without the unique "K-drama essence" but something that is aimed just to please the mass audiences .
This is not to say that I disparage China in anyway, because they themselves are capable of bringing out absolutely brilliant dramas (Nirvana in Fire,Disguiser to name a couple) and have a rich aesthetic appeal in their works. I just wish they would restrain themselves a little and focus more on investing in their own dramas rather than snapping up K-dramas and K-actors/actresses. That way, the K-drama industry will have some breathing space and they will figure out how to tackle their problems on their own, without losing the quality of their productions.
Signal and Misaeng, are prime examples that though difficult, lush funding is not necessarily required for bringing out absolute gems of dramas.
Kudos to PD Kim again and again and hope he will continue to do his amazing work in his own unique style.

Still watching Oh Hae-young Again and loving it for the most part, although I still say half the characters need to go to an AA meeting and Hae-young needs to stop throwing things and get help for her angry, violent tendencies. I did feel for her this week, though.
I finished White Christmas and it's now one of my favorites of all-time. It's a drama that has left me thinking and will probably leave me thinking for a long time to come. I almost want to re-watch it with the information and questions it gave me.
Still watching and enjoying Best Love. Dokko Jin is just HILARIOUS. Major props to Cha Seung-won for his portrayal of this character because with the wrong interpretation he could just be utterly unlikable.
I really can't wait for Police Unit 38. It's almost here!!! It's my most-anticipated drama of the summer so I hope it doesn't let me down. With that cast and crew, though, I have so much faith.
Also looking forward to Wanted and W! Please be good, shows!

TVN's list 2016 had ranking on lucky/unlucky casting cases.
No 1. Jo Jin-woong. He almost missed 'Agassi' and 'Signal'- especially 'Signal' which he eventually accepted the role by PD Kim Won-suk's persistent persuasion.
No 2. Song Joong_gi of DoTS. Won Bin, Jo In-sung, Gong Yoo, Kim Woo-bin were candidates, but they all turned down (burden of doing a pre-production drama). Was it Won Bin or Hyun Bin?
No 3. Seo Hyun-jin of OHYA. She casted only 2 months before the airing after two actresses (Kim Ah-jung, Choi Gang-hee) turned it down. The PD who did 'Three musketeers' with her recommended.
No 4. Ji Sung. 'Kill Me Heal Me' team tried to case Hyun Bin and Lee Seong-gi. Production team had difficulties because no one wanted to do but JS to the rescue.
No 5. and 6. Jo Jung-suk in 'Oh my Ghostess'. His role was offered to Daniel Choi first.
Kwan Do-won in movie 'GokSung'- He turned down 3 times but Director Na Hong-Jin was persistent.
No 7. Susie in 'Architecture 101'. GG Seo Hyun and Moon Chae-won got the offer first, but they turned it down.
btw I thought pre-production system was to be welcomed by everyone, but it seems that is not the case. It looks that actors hesitate doing one because 1. Broadcast date and broadcast itself is not clear/guaranteed, 2. They don't have the chance to check the viewers' response and adjust/modify their acting.
Agencies complain that 1. Just half of this year has passed, but broadcasting schedule is already filled up due to pre-production shows which finished or started shooting already. Thus many actors/actresses have no project to work on for the rest of year.
2. Because pre-production shows are made with overseas(Chinese) market in mind, they cast more known actors/actresses, so there is less opportunity for newbies.
Also PD of Signal concerned about pre-production shows in current situation- tend to deal with certain genre which can attract overseas market, thus there won't be another masterpiece like Sandglass.

I'm one of those who sat through all episodes of Empire of Gold for the sake of LYW though it was quite an ordeal for me. It was not because the drama was not good, contrary to that, the acting by LYW and Go Soo was awesome, it was just because I find dramas centering around in-fighting among chaebol family members for power and money quite dull and draggy.
As for Ms Temper, I would have enjoyed it more if it could be less uptight and not so hell-bent in over-emphasizing the gross unfairness, exploitation and malpractice in the corporate world. In comparison, Misaeng did it through a more natural progression of events, so it did not feel so pre-meditated. Likewise, Lawyer Jo also felt the same, it was also too deliberate in berating the exploitative behaviour of the rich and powerful to the point where the viewers do not feel much heart-felt sympathy for the plight of the underprivileged as it felt too "taken for granted"..

As much as I love LYW, QSD was stole by Mishil's character. QSD was not really bad choice, asde from the fact that GHJ was too awesome and almost ate LYW's character.

Queen Seondeok was the first korean drama I'm addicted to, and it was thanks to Lee Yo Won's portrayal of tomboy Deokman. In fact, it's thanks to her and QSD that I took a greater interest in kdramas.
Go Hyun jung as Mishil? She was good here and there but did a lot of snarling and eyebrow twitching lol.

the 1st part remind me of action drama and the 2nd part/the goofy one reminds of reverse harem shoujo manga type.
really different with what I remember about BBJX,
the 8th prince kinda has the same vibe, but the 4th prince is a bit flirty? He said "she is mine" in public, seriously?
4th prince and 13th prince os the lone pairing that goes unnoticed, but yeah let;s see, let just wait till it aired.

They'll never live up to the original (or it'll be darned hard to do so). I like that they're doing it different. I'm stopping myself from reading more about the original so I won't compare. Though I already know bits and pieces from following koala's blog.
As long as the end product is also a good drama, it's okay with me.

Interesting question! There are some memorable quotes but i'll go by this:
"What's so bad about being a little useless; a person remains a person, and there is no need to run away because you fear the future." - King Sejong, Splish Splash Love
That quotes really hit home for me who is in currently a twentysomething syndrome. It kinda has cheering, comforting effect. For all beanies, fighting!!!

Idk if this fits, but I think society this day still like to point out people little mistake to make them feel useless, not all people understand it all,
one of my friend like to point out how I can't make the typing or formatting some document she asked me to do faster, I did good but I just can't do it faster since the previous document typed badly but the remarks of my uselessness still there, like how?

+1, I had a conversation the other day about how these days society defines you by your weaknesses, then uses their outrage to define themselves. "I can't believe XY did Z, they're so terrible because of it. It's so wrong I'll get outraged about it and that will be who I am, in response to their weakness." We all have areas to work on, please recognize that and be understanding. Sorry for the tangent. :)
As for your question, mine's from Entertainer--probably the best metaphor for life I've ever encountered. Funny, but still accurate. Never be afraid to ask for help when you need it!
"Hold on. When you're really desperate, getting on your knees is the best. Look at me: I was so desperate I asked a stranger for toilet paper. Life is like that." ~the man in the stall next door.

I've been trying to remember some of my favourite quotes but I am drawing a blank. It's frustrating because I know there are so many great ones!
One thing that does come to mind is Lee Jaeha(Lee Seunggi)'s proposal in King2Hearts. The "For my revenge...I will kiss you every day...I will only love you until the day I die" quote. I don't know, it's the only thing that a character has said that ever made me swoon...

One that has stuck with me, goes something along the lines of "people don't do things because they are confident, they do them and then gain the confidence" That's not the exact quote (I really should go back and write it down exactly) and it's from Oh! Yay! Oh HaeYoung IMPcap Episode 11 drew such an explosive reaction that for the first time ever, I reached 1000 views in a day. Yay! JB must be laughing at me if she reads this.
But really, I love that show.
Also started on BaekHee Has Returned recaps while continuing 1 Night 2 Days recaps.
Master of Revenge/ Master - God of Noodles recaps are on hold but will return to them this weekend.
So... today, I went for a job interview and I'm not sure what to make of it. They were nice to me and so welcoming and informative and I'd asked at the end of the interview about my ranking among their other candidates and they honestly replied that I was among the lower ranked ones. That, I understand, but what threw me off was that it was because they were hesitant to send me to India for job trips (I'm female) which is required by the job and they were concerned about safety.
I'm not sure what to make of it because yes, I get their point in that India hasn't been stellar in it's treatment of women, both local and foreign, but then... that means I'm almost rejected because I'm female... uh...
How do you even answer to that? I just answered it with some kind of "but everywhere's dangerous... and I'll take precautions" which admittedly is a weak-ass answer but I can't exactly counter that with anecdotes since I've never been to India.
And really, I really really mean no offense to Indians but... that's what's happening...
If I get rejected, I don't think I'll be able to stop wondering whether it was because I was less than stellar (which I can accept) or because I was female (which is just so unfair. I really liked that position though).
I'm not angry because I understand and on the surface, it is not exactly strictly sexism (but of course it is, but on the surface it's not) but it is sexism and uhm... Hm. I dunno.
Off to recap Noodles. Bring me Noodles drenched in blood!

It is strictly sexism. They should have told you, so-and-so are the risks, do you still want the job ? It should be your decision.
And a better company would have ensured that THEY took safety measures to protect their employees - male/female. Men get mugged/ car jacked/ etc etc. Are they going to employ black belts only now ?... Pfft ...
i'm from India and yes we don't have a great track record of women's safety. But it varies from city to city, kind of job, and many other factors. If you get the job *fingers crossed* and need any info about the place, do let me know.
All the best

The reply series! Reply 1997 and Reply 1988 being my faves!
I think the japanese drama Orange Days (2004) had this slice-of-life feel to it. (Sort of like Cheese in the Trap, both being university dramas).
School 2013 has that realistic feel that is often missing from High School dramas.
I guess the web drama The Secret Message (2015) could also be considered slice-of-life as well as the japanese asadoras Mare (2015) and Amachan (2013) (although the later ones might be more coming-of-age).

Japan does slice of life quite well. Check out: Shinya Shokudo (3 seasons and a film), Okashi no Ie, Fuben na Benriya, Suteki na Sen Taxi (time-travelling twist), Beach Boys
Shinzanmono takes a slice-of-life approach towards solving crimes.
If you like cats: Neko Zamurai (not introspective or anything, but funny as heck).
As Am mentioned, asadora are also pretty slice-of-life and easy to watch - each episode is 15 minutes. Asadora tend to last about six months.
A number of Japanese dramas are classified as "human drama", and those are generally heavier, with a more realistic look at (social) issues. A couple for you to try: Soredemo, Ikite Yuku; Soratobu Taiya

I really liked Valid Love, his role was pretty major in that one.
Just finished White Christmas as well - he's really grown up since then! He was almost waif-like...
Of the sort of loose group of model actors his age (Sung Joon, Kim Young Kwang, Hong Jung Hyun, Kim Woo Bin), I think that Lee Soo Hyuk has done best at trying a variety of characters. It's fun to see him as a more happy and athletic person - what a contrast to the vampidol and Scholar That Walks the Night roles! Some of the other models have gotten lead roles, but many of those dramas weren't my favorites. (looking at you Heirs, Madame Antoine, D-Day...)

I watched Ms Temper this week after reading nothing but glowing reviews. And it was a good show.
But, but, but ... was anyone else disappointed that the 3rd husband did not get more footage ? After he appeared i wanted them to stop with the stupid plans and just wanted to see Yeon Jeong-Hun being evil.... hehe ... plus he had great chemistry with Lee Yo-Won despite having just 2/3 scenes together ....
...... And i finally finished DOTS after leaving it around at ep 12 a month back ... That was the problem with DOTS - it was all so pretty but i did not care for single character. Zero emotional investment. So it kind of felt like a very empty show to me with really sparkly packaging

Oh man, on the plane home from Korea I watched Dongju: Portrait of a Poet and I was just crying all over my blanket, haha. It's not the best movie I've ever seen but it's so real and gentle, which makes the horrifyingly inhumane prison scenes even worse. This is definitely Kang Haneul's show but Park Jung Min (my bias lol) stole the movie for me. Kang's portrayal is so sensitive and reserved it was a little hard for me to connect with Dongju, though I tink that was the point. Dongju struggled with himself and his choices and desires and hesitantly lived his life following quietly, letting others dictate his future. Park's Monggyu was impulsive and zealous, feeding off the dream of revolution and feeding others in return. He always caught my attention in every scene with his righteous anger and gentle love for his cousin. There's a scene where Korean is mixed into a conversation with a Japanese officer and it's so devastating to see characters revert to their mother tongue, crying out personal truths to an oppressor who can't interpret their words. A very quiet, haunting film about the brotherhood of two cousins, their love for their country, and their clash over the power of words. I give it a B+.
In other news, God of Noodles is ruining my life. I love it.

Hi,everyone. In case you didn't know, the Chinese distributor for Scarlet Heart:Ryeo released a trailer a few days back. Here's the link : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K1HFoCnyqjA
I would love to hear your thoughts on it and who you ship Hae Soo with the most. Also do you think the drama will do well and do you prefer a sad ending like the original novel or a happy one?
I only watched until ep 8 of the Chinese version of the drama but it seems pretty clear that the Korean team have changed a lot of things just like I thought they would since they were adapting the book with Korean history. The 4th prince is much more crueler and it seems like both the 4th and 8th prince vie for Hae Soo more obviously in the teaser whereas in the books, 4th prince only found out about her relationship with the 8th prince after 8th himself spilled the beans. Moreover, the Korean side seems to have made the 13th prince have feelings for Hae Soo as well whereas in the novel,he was only her best friend.
I'm not sure if I should be worried about those changes because overall I loved the trailer and hope that the drama delivers since the cast have been working so hard on this since early this year. I'd love to hear everyone's thoughts on the trailer. ^_^
P.S- I already have second lead syndrome and Jisoo syndrome and my favourite scenes was when Hae Soo surprised the princes and her moment with Ji Soo.

Bu Bu Jing Xin romanticised the fourth prince. Yinzhen did his fair share of plotting, though a large part was done behind the scenes and towards the later stages of the succession struggle.
The trailer seems okay. The ending should be in keeping with Goryeo history, I think. Nicky Wu did not have the gravitas to carry off Yinzhen. Lee Jun-ki's prince seems a bit more forward about his aggressive intentions, but overall he doesn't cut it for me. Kang Haneul should be a better actor than Kevin Cheng.

4th prince in BBJX IMO is crueler than in SK, it just in the drama, they make his love line prominent , they show his gentle side as a prince without much about him after wears the dragon robe,
4th LJK prince seems so flirty to me, it kinda weird,
and I agree with KHN as in the teaser (seems to) deliver really good things than Kevin Cheng

been waiting for your post ..(insert hug)
1) It feels like the romance is up front, who has their mind about her and who is not . It also seems like everyone love her at the same time. This is different with BBJX since the romance is open to the audience and the character involve but quite a secret to anybody else, it's really a secret. The 4th prince even grabs the wrist and touch her??
please no love line with 13th prince, that is one of the best thing in BBJX, friend as mutual and sincerity
2) the plot is different, there's vigilante mask 4th prince? he covered with blood and rage and crying? the up front ambitious queen? action??
3) the snow, the lantern and the 8th prince moment together feel similar
I think it safe for playing it quite differently but tbh this make me think of Jade:Palace of Locked Heart with better execution since in BBJX,it's more about the silent love between the prince and Rui Xi that change the politic wind, whether they believe it or not.
It's the lingering feeling, loyalty, and choice that lived in small detail.
all those princes faction, bonding and their different interaction between prince and ruo xi,
I really like the scene when 14th prince ask ruo xi why she face him differently thn 13th prince and she ask that it's about sincerity not politic and 14th prince just can't understand at the moment.
but overall, I knew what to expect and it's quite different so I hope it has good execution,
although I miss 4th prince sunny )+spoiler ) wardrobe

The Chinese version almost fully mirrored the novel; it remains one of my favourite C-drama to date. I loved the compelling early interactions between the characters (from funny innocent ones with the younger princes to the more sombre ones with her older beaus). It resembles the saeguks where you know the fate of everyone involved. BBJX was, however, more compelling to me for reasons more detailed than what I should write on a K-drama site. An example was that the audience could identify with modern Ruoxi, doomed to spend the rest of her life in the past and almost all having a cruel fate (heartbreaking fact which becomes self-evident as the story progresses).
I am pumped, however, for the K-drama. I am really digging the ensemble cast, full of actors/ newcomers I recognise. This drama is supposed to be adapted from the novel; so there would not be as many similarities to the C-version, which I do not mind. I'm guessing they might leave the pregnancy out (though it still looks like the princes are already married- biased-me is quite OK with that for this drama unlike moonlight(?) one because we know that haesoo will ultimately not be remembered in history)The cinematography looks great (and product placement will be limited to the brief modern period). Few 20 episodes, mightily fine shirtless princes,... this looks to be a saeguk I'm going to have a hard time watching.l

Happy Friday, Beanies!
I need Monday to get here sooner, please and thank you. Because Oh Hae-Young Again. This show is just fabulous, although all the angst and anger and sadness from the last two episodes was just so heartbreaking.
I'll finish Entertainer, but the show has really lost steam for me. It started out sort of boring and uneven, got a lot better in the middle, and now that it's almost over I'm finding I'm putting off watching the last-aired episode...
Lucky Romance is finally finding it's rhythm! I'm falling in love with how adorkable Ryu Joon-yeol is, and I also really like Lee Soo-hyuk. The show isn't captivating me by how amazing it is, but it's sweet and funny and weird and I like it a lot. Bo-nui's random salt sprinkling just makes me crack up.
Beautiful Gong Shim is my second favorite drama I'm currently watching. Everyone's killing it, especially Namgoong Min who is such a weirdo but a cutie.
As for upcoming shows, I'm looking at the lineups and I'm kind of overwhelmed because there are a ton of dramas I'm interested in, but I'm realizing that dramas are taking over my life. Like, hello, I'm watching four currently airing dramas right now when I've hardly ever watched any television in my life before. K-dramas are both a blessing and a curse. One half of me says "no, don't do it! You have other things in your life to accomplish" but the other half says "yes! Do it! You know you want it! Succumb to the addiction! Mwahaha!"
I think I'll stop now. Happy watching, everyone!

Aaaah, it feels good to be here. Thank you, DB, for everything you do--you make Kdrama addiction a joy. And fellow beanies! You guys make the community what it is, thanks. :) I won't actually be back for a few weeks--I'm getting on a plane tonight for England! ^^ Is it bad that I'm still trying to find the time while there to watch the end of Entertainer?
Entertainer: CEO is so craaaazy! They edited the last scene of him freaking out perfectly, ending on the smile before the maniacal laughter. And everybody put in a stellar performance this week dealing with Sung-hyun's death. I've never really hated Hye-ri's acting, but even I can see she's improved leaps and buckets throughout the drama. Oooh I'm so excited for next week!
Mirror of the Witch: I'm still loving it--more than any other Saguek I've tried (I've never been able to finish one... what?!), but does anyone else occasionally wonder why Jun is there? We're basically (really?) halfway through the drama and he hasn't done much to help out. Hopefully that changes starting next week.
Beautiful Gong-shim: *bows humbly before the drama-verse* please don't let the hijinks end for angst. Please don't let the hijinks end for angst. Please please stay hilarious, I love all your characters don't let them become little balls of angst.
Other than that, I started and dropped Bride of the Century (it was the angst kicking in...) and started Love Me if you Dare. It took me way too long to jump on board this one (it was the swearing in the first ten minutes that kept me away, not gonna lie) but I'm glad I came back. It's so good! Sherlock holmes vibe, great characters, the music isn't too loud... and they referenced Knight Rider! Hah.
Quick Q: I feel like we've had some really good dramas this year. What's been your favorite so far? Mine's Signal... no, Marriage Contract. Both.
Happy Friday!

Welcome to England. You have chosen the best time to be here! It's summer and mostly sun now *looks apprehensively at weather gods though..you never know..* so have a fab time!
Also joining you to bow before the drama gods. Please please let BGS be it quirky, lovely self till the end. No Angst, and if you must have angst let there be only one episode of it.Only one ..D' you hear drama gods?*Goes to light up incense sticks for good measure*
Answer to Q: mid 2015-2016 has been a very good year for dramas.Signal definitely is my favourite in Crime/Thriller Genre. OHYA is for rom-com/melo(?).Mirror of the Witch my best Fantasy saguek, though I still cringe because Kim Sae- Ron is too young a child for having a loveline here :( SFD for Historical Saguek, though I have yet to check the other sagueks. BGS for sweet, fluffy and quirky rom-com...and The promise for downright makjang and pretty dresses :D
Have safe Journey!

@Cozybooks,
I, too, am grateful for Dramabeans writers, recappers, and ringleaders, and the veritable United Nations of fellow Kdrama viewers who hang out here. I'm sure my husband is grateful, too, as it spares him getting more of an earful than he's already subjected to. ;-)
I recently watched LOVE ME IF YOU DARE on the recommendation of a fellow Beanie. The opening OST really grabbed me. Overall I really enjoyed it, and Wallace Huo is certainly easy on the eyes. ;-)
Safe travels!

Love Me If You Dare has been very well done so far--I'm really enjoying the characters. Many Chinese dramas I've watched have over the top personalities--which I understand can be a stylistic choice, but it's not my favorite personally. So far our resident professor is the most out there--but even he is pulling off the "brilliant and cold" well.

Hi, Cozybooks,
Mermaid Scribbler turned me on to LOVE ME IF YOU DARE -- see her comments in OT#446, strand 1. I reported back the following week in OT#447 [Take 1], 40 PakalanaPikake May 12th, 2016 at 1:13 PM. -- BEWARE OF SPOILERS --
The show lost momentum in the last two episodes, but overall was great fun, and surprisingly non-creepy given the nature of some of the crimes. [I had already given up watching a lot of US cop/forensics shows when my depravity threshold was exceeded -- and I was lured off into Kdramaland.] With a bit of tweaking, it could have been gangbusters all the way.
Anyway, I'm glad you're enjoying LMIYD. ;-)

I know! The trio is so fun together, I just want them all to stay friends. It's part of what keeps me against Gong-mi and Jun-su together (although there's so much more wrong with that pairing than just this): how awkward would it be for them later! So, uh... your sister--my first love--is now married to my best friend. You don't like my best friend, but shall we invite them over for Sunday dinner anyway? No. Gong-mi should study abroad in the US, keep the trio together!

Slow week on the drama front because I was in transit for a job interview that didn't pan out (so annoying). Here's the watching:
Dramas:
OHYA: Still convinced Shrink isn't real. Have we ever seen him interact with others or is this a Sixth Sense situation? What song was playing while PDK and the Beatles were making like a depressed Abbey Road? So embarrassed for OHY1. OHY2 is a petty wench. Looking forward to SooKyung getting her act together now that she's pregnant. Finally, gosh, this show is pretty.
Mirror: I binged this the night before I hopped on a flight and was not disappointed. The romancey angles make me feel icky, but I dig the magic and the plot and just how dark the show is, given how light so many Kdramas are.
Entertainer: So much angst. Feeling the extension drag. Show could have ended this week on 16 with a 5 minute epilogue of how that performance shot them all to stardom, yadda yadda ya. Loved the holographic concert tho. Seokho is a genius for getting them to pull that because that is guaranteed YouTube hits and Headlines. Good marketing!
Lucky Romance: Dropped this. Should I pick back up?
Sandglass: I started this a few weeks ago (FUNEMPLOYMENT....) and then dropped it because I've already seen Giant (which really wanted to be Sandglass!). I found myself snarking that now that they were out of the reeducation camp, the main character was going to run off and build some apartment buildings now. Worth finishing?
US Dramas:
Orphan Black: Are we already at Season Finale? SAD. MORE CLONE CLUB. Helena is the best. Ever and ever. Rachel was pretty BA this week too.
Game of Thrones (SPOILERS): I would not give Sansa and Jon an army either. Don't even have a proper grassroots campaign speech geared up. Gotta work on their Rah Rah. I am in denial about Arya. It ruins all my theories if she dies. Where is Tower of Joy Part 2??? Come Back Bran. Now that the Hound is done building Kingsbridge w/ Ian McShane, can we get the CleganeBowl?
Mr. Robot: When does this come back? Anyone know?
Is there anything else coming out this summer worth watching? There's usually at least one good new show every summer...

The Night's King. If he's the same NK as the books, he's a former Lord Commander of the Watch, likely a Stark, who fell in love with a Walker woman (do these even exist in Show?), brought her back to the one of the Keeps (not Castle Black) on the Wall, and reigned in terror for years until the North and the Wildlings united to overthrow him. But that's the Book origin of the character. Dunno Show.

I've been worried about the fight between Hisoka and Chrollo for months and I just feel a little bit ease after the fight.
I'll be waiting for the animation of this month's chapter, it's really good.
I am glad Hisoka is alive and he gets a wake-up reality call, not everyone enjoys fighting 1 on 1 as he thought.
the entire stage is designed to kill him....
I have a tiny wished that we have Hisoka X Kurapika X illumi in one team VS Phantom Troupe ... well just if Hisoka didn't content to kill Kalluto or illumi doesn't care much about Kalluto

On GoT: i expect more of Jon speaks convincing yada yada tbh but he still knows nothing after coming back to life which is disappointing. Good thing Davos is there. And how badass is Lady Lyanna Mormont??!!
I keep thinking Arya got stabbed so they can bring back Gendry to help her, after all he is also contender for throne by Robert's lineage. Altho there is this crazy theory about split personality and whatnot which i completely can't digest at all. Speaking of throne, anyone getting bored with Dany yet? I live for the dragons but her slavery bay journey is draggy :/

RE: Dany - Jon needs to talk to Dany's speechwriter. She certainly has them to spare.
RE: Gendry - He's probably back in KL or somewhere in the countryside making wagon wheels and hoes. No way he crossed the Narrow Sea in that dinghy and no way he went back to the Brotherhood after they sold him off to Melisandre for kinks back in S3. I wouldn't discount Littlefinger somehow scooping him up and parking him in the Vale tho. Littlefinger is a shady MOFO.

Is it Monday yet??? I love when dramas come along that make me look forward to that day, and Oh Hae-young Again has pretty much hijacked the entirety of my drama-watching interest.
Saw the leaked trailer for k-BBJX aka Scarlet Heart, and it actually looks...... good?! I haven't watched the original but IU is killing it in whatever footage I'm seeing of her - and she looks like such a doll in period clothing. Love what I'm seeing of the Princes too, especially Lee Jun-ki as #4 and Kang Ha-neul as 8, plus our puppy Ji-soo. So yeah, I'm definitely curious enough to want to give it a try, I just hope the writing and the full series lives up to what the trailer feels like. I can't wait for the proper trailer to get out so I can see things properly - visually, it looks gorgeous.
(and speaking of trailers, I know Lee Kyung-hee can pretty much spin straw into gold and Descendants of the Sun was also a smash hit after some random/underwhelming-to-international-fans teasers.....but Kim Woo-bin is the least convincing "rock star" - or any kind of musical performer, really - EVER. It's the first time I've seen him so bland and void of his usual charisma, though he had it back when he was acting like a jerk on-camera for that teaser - skelly had it right when she said he came across as defanged)

yeah, I don't know why I ever thought I'd be able to resist, reservations about currently-airing kdramas notwithstanding - we were doomed the minute they cast oppa :)
It does feel like a fantasy sageuk, but I'll excuse that one since there's time travel involved - better to own the fantasy aspect than do a Ja Myung-go which ended up being the worst of both worlds because it could never make up its mind what it was.

*Lucky Romance* : i dropped it at second episode but after reading recaps of epispde 3,4 i think its not that bad and i might pick it up. We all had high expectations regarding this because hwang eum jung is a comedy queen and her recent dramas were daebak but it's okay if it's a little different from what i thought it'd be lol
*Vampire Detective* : talking about being different than what i thought it'd be this drama is really good at that ! I'm only surviving this because of lee joon (the short stories per episode dont inspire me that much) also i love the blonde girl (can't recall her name)
*Mirror of the witch* : currently on pause , i'm not that sure about this but i think i'll pick it up after exams
*Master of Revenge/God of noodles* : I'M LOVING THIS no actually i might be obsessed with this. I love the dark and melodramatic theme, the characters are wonderful and the story is just right for my taste it's like eating a perfect bowl of noodles with right amount of everything. This is the best drama for me in 2016 so far along with Signal and Six flying dragons. And ofcourse there's no chocolate, sugar or sweets in noodles so i understand that this drama is not everyone's taste :D

Happy Friday! After a short week last week I felt like this week lasted forever.
I recently finished watching DOTS and thought it was entertaining. I absolutely loved Song Joong-Ki's character. He was such a cheeky bastard and it was great. I also rally liked Song Hye-Kyo's character and was a good compliment to the hero. The show was absolutely beautifully filmed. But as for story I didn't think it was anything special. And there were some pretty unrealistic things or inconsistencies in it. I watched it with my Mom and she loved it.
I am now in the process of watching Signal and I am obsessed with that show. I will go to my Mom's house every other weekend so we can get take-out and binge on kdramas, but I couldn't wait another week and gave an excuse to visit her a week early. I am also going this weekend which will be the 3rd week in a row just because I can't get enough of Signal. My mom prefers DOTS but I am definitely in love with Signal. We only have 6 episodes left and I don't know what I'll do when it ends.
I am also currently watching Ms. Temper and Nam Jung Gi which is also really good. I really like how it tackles things like sexism, work politics, working parents and other issues and all without being overbearing or preachy. I also love love Lee Yo-Won's character. I think she is one of my favorite heroine's in a long time. And LYW is doing such a wonderful job of bringing this complex character to life.
Not sure which drama I will watch next on my own after Ms. Temper but I plan to watch OHYA with my Mom after we finish Signal. I don't like watching kdramas until they are finished or almost finished airing so I don't have to wait for episodes.
Hope everyone has a wonderful weekend!

So glad it's Friday
I've put dramas on a hold for now - I'm surprised I haven't given in and watched the lastest oh haeyoung and gong shim eps yet :)
I was really upset last week when I learnt of Muhammad Ali passing.
He is truly an inspiration, people like him don't come around often. his refusal to fight in vietnam and being prepared to face the consequences including being stripped of his title and being unable box in his prime. The way he fought for civil liberties in such a dangerous time where others were assinated (Martin Luther King, Malcolm x) and also the way he used his platform to help others was amazing, a true humantarian. And his courageous way battle with Parkinson's. He is also a great example of a Muslim :)
Just wanted to get that out, I've been a fan for a long time and feel I've learnt a lot. Sorry for the mini essay!

I don't think Jang Yoon-jung has completed work on the BOTWG adaptation yet, they only mentioned she'd taken up the project.
I'm optimistic that we'll get this one eventually because at least we have a writer attached - there's been talk of an adaptation before in 2009 but no writer there, so I hope this one does make it on air before the decade is out!

Usually takes a year to produce a drama. It's shorter in Korea because of the live shoots, but depending on the network, it may take longer. (For example, Cable avoids live shoots by putting several in the can first and writing the script outline ahead of time.)

Anyone watch Lucky Romance? Anyone realize that Je Soo Ho is pretty much displaying signs of mild autism and he made a statement that sounded a lot like he was demisexual. (I was excited to hear it.) I kinda wish the drama would explicitly state it.
If it is mild autism they are shooting for, they are doing a pretty good job of it. They aren't making him a savant, the lead female is smarter than him, and they are showing he does have emotions beyond his autism.
But his statement about how he can't understand how people can have sex without affection, also sounds like demisexuality. Or at least graysexual, which fits into the overall character history too...
I like they didn't connect the two as always being together, but I would like them to up the number of people with autism and asexuality just to give perspective and balance. I wonder if he's demiromantic too... but there isn't enough evidence yet to pin that on him. I also appreciate it's not part of the main plot, but played smoothly in the background.
First time seeing anyone on Korean TV with either of those labels, and I've been watching for a long time.

Oh and anyone realize that Another Oh Hae Yeong is using a 5 act plot structure? I really like it because it plays the plot without much conflict while displaying some of the most Korean plotting I've seen in a while. (Also fully displaying Mugyo as the central source of how the magic system works)
I'm sticking to Mirror of the Witch, it seems to be playing between a five act and a three act plot structure. It's a bit difficult to watch in places (mostly the theming, and I kinda dislike how the shadow goes for the skirt with females, but the nose for males... it's Freud... but I'm a bit uncomfortable with the sexual assault symbology being placed only on females)
Beautiful Gong Shim is managing to avoid Man Sickness... which I appreciate. I hope they follow through.
Taiwanese drama Love at 17, despite the heavy use of tropes is making me squeal, because the male lead effing knows and respects consent. It's really hard to find rom coms with consent written in. For the same reason I feel 50/50 about Refresh Man. Consent is not clearly drawn in Refresh Man and he's supposed to be sexy for it?

@Kim Yoonmi,
(Also fully displaying Mugyo as the central source of how the magic system works)
Thanks for pointing that out. It dovetails with my initial reaction to Dr. Park's explanation that DK is a "special case" and not spiritually attuned. Sez who? Considering how sensitive his noona is, and how devastated he was when his father died, the good doctor might be mistaken. At the very least, it could be the collective unconscious trying to get DK's attention.

OHYA speculations (and possible SPOILERS):
I wanted to share some of my OHYA speculations before ep. 18 airs— I may be spectacularly wrong about most of these, but some might be right, so I thought it best to hide these here since I don’t want to spoil anyone’s viewing experience.
Some speculations I’ve already posted:
• There was a real accident distinct from the imaginary (and symbolic) accidents involving TJ running DK down.
• Most of what we’ve seen has happened in DK’s mind while he’s been in the hospital. I think he momentarily died on the operating table when his heart stopped— he went to “the light” and had a dreamlike enlightenment experience, then when he learned how to really embrace life and love, his heart started beating again (which we heard when he said “Saranghae”).
• The truth about DK’s father’s death is key. The whole ruining-TJ-situation never happened— it was his subconscious mind’s way of processing the guilt and pent-up feelings he’s had about his dad’s death.
• “Passionate Bottle Opener is bottled-up DK‘s story.
Other speculations that I haven’t posted before:
• There is another Oh Hae Young. She was at the scene of the real accident, and she comforted DK (whom she didn’t know) as he lay dying. We heard a man say “Don’t touch him”— I think he was talking to her. The PD inserted fleeting clips of fingers and hands in the accident scene, and with all the hand holding DK and HY have done, and DK’s quote about the gift of having someone hold your hand as you’re dying, I feel certain that HY held his hand to comfort him. She may have also put her hand(s) on his head (like she did in the restaurant), and she most likely said a prayer to God and Buddha for his recovery.
• I think that she is the one he “had visions of before meeting her” (which will feel like memories to him), and that she was the reason the love-at-first-sight discussion happened. So even though their relationship was fictional, I think they’ll show us that they were destined to be together. I expect we’ll see the scene where they cross paths and turn around really happen. And if we’re lucky, we’ll see heavy HY + old DK.

(cont.)
• I suspect that this is similar to the Wizard of Oz in that most of the story took place in the lead character’s mind; the story was an allegory that provided important (and in DK’s case, life-saving) wisdom; and the characters looked like people in the lead character’s real life, but in the story, they represented archetypes and parts of the self that needed healing. Each character has taught DK something important, and many times, I felt that different characters were speaking for DK. I think HY represented DK’s repressed self-expression and emotional side (and the part of himself that insisted “I’m not gonna die”), and TJ represented DK’s angry self that didn’t let others in, hid behind his pride, and eventually wouldn’t want to live anymore. (And a wild guess: In DK’s real world, An-na, Hoon, and quite possibly Hee-ran, are really dogs!) The PD often used mirrors— and in the hospital scene in which DK said “I got sick because I couldn’t hug you”, he was looking in the mirror, and we could only see half of HY’s face. I think all the scenes of DK recording sounds, and listening, listening, listening, were about his subconscious doing its work. And the love story was really about DK learning to love and embody once again the happy, expressive self he was before his father’s death.
• I’ve felt pretty sure that TJ’s story was just an emotional parallel of DK’s guilt over his father’s death, but I wasn’t sure why he felt so guilty (though it was obvious that there was a lot more to the story than what they showed us in ep. 10). There were so many references to rock-throwing, and he was shown throwing rocks that day, that I was worried that that had something to do with it. But ep. 17 brought up the possibility of suicide— and I realized that his father was “hanging” upside-down when he first said that Life is transient. I do think it’s possible that he thought his father committed suicide, and that he was somehow responsible, but he’ll learn that that was another misunderstanding.
It’s also quite possible that DK was feeling like he didn’t want to live anymore just before the accident. Perhaps he was drunk (like TJ was when he nearly fell off the bridge)— and that was the huge mistake he made while drunk that he had referred to before. I felt that the scene showing him moving his father’s body represented how he’s been pushing and pulling the weight of his guilt, and finally reached a point where he said that he just couldn’t do it anymore.
• I had a sudden insight while watching ep. 17— I think the white blossoms that were raining down on DK during the accident scene came from Hae Young’s bouquet. (That’s why we saw the petals falling from the bouquet in her office during ep. 17). I also suspect that HY’s left arm/hand was hurt in the accident (which is why we saw the cast, the burned hand, and the bracelet that may have represented a hospital bracelet).

Maybe I’ve been the biggest sucker for the PD’s trolling, but this is how the clues added up in my brain. In any case, it’s been fun trying to play Nancy Drew.
